What Does 'High Protein' Actually Mean?

If you have ever stood in a supermarket aisle squinting at the back of a protein bar, you are not alone. Protein labelling in the UK is a confusing business, and that confusion costs us. I see it weekly in clinic: people who genuinely believe they are eating a high protein diet, yet when we sit down and work through a food diary together, they are sometimes hitting only half of what their body actually needs.


Understanding how food labels work, and where they mislead us, is one of the most practical steps you can take for your health. So let us break it down.


The Rules Behind the Label

Under current UK food law, a product can carry a high protein claim if at least 20% of its total energy comes from protein. That sounds reassuring, but it tells you nothing about the actual grams of protein you will be eating in a realistic portion. It is a ratio, not a quantity.


Take cooked quinoa as an example. It is celebrated in wellness circles and often marketed as a protein food. Yet 100g of cooked quinoa delivers roughly 4g of protein alongside around 19g of carbohydrate. Compare that with 100g of cooked chicken breast, which provides about 30g of protein and virtually no carbohydrate. Both foods might legitimately appear on a high protein shortlist, but nutritionally they occupy entirely different leagues.


Complete and Incomplete: Why Structure Matters

Proteins are built from amino acids, and there are 20 of them in total. Nine of these are classified as essential, meaning the body cannot manufacture them and must obtain them through food. Foods that supply all nine in adequate amounts are known as complete proteins.


Animal sources including meat, fish, eggs, and dairy are complete proteins. They also tend to be dense in protein relative to their overall calorie content, with little or no carbohydrate. A small number of plant foods, notably soy, buckwheat, and hemp seeds, are also complete, though they come alongside a more significant carbohydrate load.


Most plant proteins are incomplete, lacking one or more essential amino acids. That does not make them nutritionally worthless, but it does mean that vegetarians and vegans need to think about variety and combination across the day to achieve a full amino acid profile. Pairing lentils with rice, or hummus with wholegrain bread, achieves this, though you do need to be deliberate about it.


The Problem with Processed Protein

Walk down any supermarket snack aisle and you will find protein bars, protein yoghurts, protein cereals, and even protein confectionery. The marketing is compelling. The nutrition is often far less impressive.


Many of these products rely on isolated or hydrolysed proteins, such as soy protein isolate or whey concentrate, which can be absorbed by the body, but whose effectiveness is influenced by everything they are packaged alongside. Gums, sweeteners, synthetic flavourings, and emulsifiers all affect the digestive environment. The body is not a simple machine that extracts protein regardless of what surrounds it.


When you see a bar boasting 20g of protein, it is worth asking what else is in there. If the answer includes 25g of sugar and an ingredient list that reads like a chemistry textbook, the protein is not doing the work you think it is.


Three Things to Look For Instead

  • Protein per 100g rather than per serving. Serving sizes are often smaller than what you would actually eat. The per 100g figure lets you compare foods honestly.

  • The protein to carbohydrate ratio. For weight management, blood sugar balance, and hormone support, you want protein to dominate. If carbohydrate outweighs protein significantly, rethink the portion or the food.

  • The ingredient list. Real protein sources have short, recognisable ingredient lists. If you cannot picture the individual components on a plate, that is a useful signal.


Whole Food Wins Every Time

Eggs, meat, fish, natural Greek yoghurt, tofu, seeds, nuts, and legumes remain the most reliable protein sources available. They bring the full spectrum of vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats that support digestion, hormonal function, and immunity in ways that a fortified shake simply cannot replicate.


Next time you see a high protein flash on a packet, flip it over. Look at what the protein content actually is per 100g, consider how much you are realistically going to eat, and cast your eye down the ingredient list. How high is the protein per serving, does it contain ingredients you do not recognise as real food? How does it compare to products without the high protein label?


Remember, high protein is now being used by brands to promote their products, even if they actually do not contain lots of protein, or if the product is fake. For example, quinoa has a high protein label, but it actually only contains less than 4g per 100g - compare this to Chicken, which has 30g of protein per 100g, it is suprising it contains a high protein label.


This simple habit is one of the most powerful things you can do for your nutrition.
